Botnet Infection: Internet Of Things Security Questionable

Science has given us a lot in the form of NASA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many more as the list is infinite, as compared to the vast digital progress in technology.

Also, we were very well aware in our school days about a famous essay which usually opens with the lines: “Science has advantages and disadvantages”.

But none of us might had thought that this, “very essay” fits best in the current  21st century  immense tech innovations. Like we know, “Internet of things” is the dearest love of the people, very much interested in the tech innovations, yes we had witnessed a vast progress in (IoT) as of now, we have everything Smart from Smart Thermostat, Smart Plug, Smart Bulbs, Smart Lock, to Smart Toothbrush and the list is in progress.

So, how does the above essay fits in all the above said innovations? The disadvantage comes in the form of, “Botnet“.

What is all about, “Botnet ddos” and why should we fear out of bot attack?

This has something to relate with the famous 2016 Dyn cyberattack that took place on October 21, 2016 and caused major internet services disruption in all over Europe and North America.

Definition of Botnet in layman terms goes like this:

In more, refined words a bot can be defined to be a computer or internet-connected device, i.e IOT infected with malware and thoroughly controlled by a central command-and-control server.

How this cyberattack was related to, “(IoT) devices “?

The activities are believed to have been executed through a botnet consisting of a large number of Internet-connected devices ((IoT enabled)—such as printers, IP cameras, residential gateways and baby monitors—that had been infected with the Mirai malware.

Also,  Botnet facilitate distributed denial-of-service attacks aka botnet DDoS attacks, making websites captive and flooded with surplus traffic losing control to the hacker servers. The inexpensive, “(IoTdevices” and internet of things security namely IP configured webcams, Internet routers, CCTV other electronic gadgets happens to be the vulnerable gateways to the much said botnet attack.

In case, whenever these internet of things devices  weighs less in cyber security they fell in the trap of cyber security concern facilitating effective build up of the botnets targeted combined cyberattacks. Moreover, Dyn cyberattack victims were none other than the huge web traffic monopoly like Twitter and Netflix, as they got temporarily wiped off  the Internet at that miserable time.

The shining dot com era  of 2000 onwards would not mind having such cyber threat in the form of tech surprise, to silence and crash websites evan evade from the cyberspace. We have two facets of this like, “Digital marketing” that do its best “by hook or by crook” to generate huge traffic to the sites, on the other hand we have Botnet that paralyse the site and finish its presence thoroughly via large traffic input into the sites.

All this seems to be the witty byproduct result of the wacky inventions that fairly materialise into the famous saying of the past, “science advantages and disadvantages”.
